Phonics Progress Monitoring: Why Growth Matters More Than "Lessons Completed"

In multiple-choice based platforms, where students are able to guess through answers without deeply understanding the material, students can complete dozens of phonics lessons without mastering the skills those lessons were designed to teach.

4. Does the assessment measure actual decoding ability?

Multiple-choice responses can sometimes be correct because of guessing or process of elimination. Tasks based on reading out loud provide more direct evidence of how a student processes print.


5. Does improvement transfer beyond the activity?

Students should eventually apply phonics knowledge to new words and connected text, not only repeat words encountered during practice.
